Welcome to Ocean State Disaster Team (OSDT)!

OSDT IS HERE TO HELP

Ocean State Disaster Team

Rhode Islanders Helping Rhode Islanders. Ready for Whatever Comes Ashore.

A dedicated team of local volunteers providing critical support to our communities before, during, and after disasters strike. From coastal storms to winter blizzards, we are here to help our neighbors.

Who We Are

We are the Ocean State Disaster Team (OSDT), a community-based, non-profit organization composed of your friends, family, and neighbors. Our members are trained and certified volunteers from all walks of life—from retired firefighters and nurses to carpenters and students—united by a single mission: to serve Rhode Island in its times of greatest need.

Our roots are planted firmly in the communities we serve, from Westerly to Woonsocket. We understand the unique challenges our state faces, from the threat of hurricanes along our 400 miles of coastline to the impact of severe winter weather. We are not outsiders; we are a local, agile force dedicated to building a more resilient Rhode Island, one neighborhood at a time.

What We Do: Prepare, Respond, Recover

Our work is focused on the complete lifecycle of a disaster. We provide organized, hands-on support where it's needed most.

1. Prepare

Before a disaster hits, preparation is key to saving lives and property. We empower our communities with the knowledge and tools they need to be ready.

  • Community Workshops: Hosting free events on creating family emergency plans, building "go-bags," and securing homes.

  • Public Awareness: Partnering with local news and municipalities to spread timely information about impending weather events.

  • Vulnerable Population Outreach: Proactively checking in with and offering planning assistance to elderly and at-risk residents.

2. Respond

When a disaster occurs, our teams deploy quickly to provide immediate, on-the-ground assistance in coordination with first responders.

  • Rapid Damage Assessment: Reporting on conditions to help officials direct resources effectively.

  • Resource Distribution: Setting up points of distribution for essential supplies like water, food, batteries, and blankets.

  • Wellness Checks: Canvassing affected neighborhoods to check on residents, especially those who may be isolated.

  • Emergency Shelter Support: Assisting in the setup and management of local community shelters.

3. Recover

The aftermath of a disaster can be overwhelming. OSDT stays to help with the difficult process of cleaning up and rebuilding.

  • Debris Cleanup & Management: Organizing volunteer teams for tree, flood, and debris removal from homes and public spaces.

  • Connecting with Aid: Guiding residents through the process of applying for state and federal assistance like FEMA aid.

  • Long-Term Support: Collaborating with local organizations to address the long-term rebuilding and emotional recovery needs of the community.
